MPM Super Twin-driver Martijn de Haas dominates European Finals with personal bests and convincing win

Santa Pod (England), September 9, 2014 – ‘Game, set and match’ for MPM-driver Martijn de Haas at the European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway, as the MPM Super Twin-driver totally dominated the final race of the FIM European Drag Bike Championship. In a new personal best (6.632 sec) Martijn de Haas, driving his brother Joeri tuned MPM-Harley, was the number one qualifier, proved his great form again in eliminations with 6.65 and 6.75 sec runs, to win the final against Job Heezen in another stunning personal best of 6.623 seconds. “A well-deserved win as we were fast all weekend”, said Martijn de Haas. Many years of hard work finally paid off for Martijn and his brother Joeri.

Santa Pod Raceway, Europe’s most popular dragstrip, was host to the fourth and last round of the FIM European Drag Bike Championship. At the first round of the championship at Santa Pod in May, Martijn and Joeri de Haas and their MPM Super Twin-team set a new personal best with 6.787 sec, their first ever 6-second run. In the other races this season, De Haas brothers had been consistent and fast too, so they were looking forward to come back to Santa Pod and as the weather conditions were perfect, they were ready to break personal bests once again. De Haas’ first qualifying attempt was a 7.14 sec, and although it was not the number they were looking for, it was enough to take the provisional number one qualifying position. They skipped the second run and so Martijn de Haas ended day one in second position. But in a storming run with the front wheel high up in the air, De Haas’ third run was 6.632 sec, another new personal best and the number one qualifying position. No doubt the MPM-team had the right set-up for the Santa Pod track, as in eliminations they were not only fast, but consistent too. Despite a bye-run in the first round, De Haas stormed to 6.65 sec, to copy that in the semi-final with 6.75 and 212.89 mph (342.6 km/h). “In a bye-run you can take it easy and only go for the next round, but that’s not our way. We want to go full throttle. That’s how to learn the most about the set-up and the handling of the bike”, said De Haas about their way of racing in eliminations. In the final the MPM-driver had to face Job Heezen, also from Holland. A slightly better reaction time gave De Haas an advantage and side-by-side the two Dutch racers made their pass. In 6.623 sec and 345.8 km/h De Haas crossed the finish line first and in another new personal best he took the European Finals Super Twin win. “This is what makes drag racing so great. At 300 km/h I looked to the left where Job was. Sometimes I was in front, sometimes Job had a slight advantage, but I was at the finishline first”, said an extremely happy De Haas after ‘the final of the year’. All those years of hard work finally paid off this season, with this win as an absolute and well deserved highlight. “We won the European Finals before, but the runs were not good and we were lucky. This time we really deserved it by being the most consistent and fastest”, said Martijn de Haas at the podium ceremony where he and brother Joeri fell into each other's arms. With his European Finals win De Haas ended the 2014 season as the number three in the FIM European Super Twin Championship.
